Certain Sounds

Peru is a fascinating country, filled with distinctive sounds.

Any Peruvian can instantly tell you what this sound is:

If you have lived in Peru, that sound immediately invokes this image:

That's the knife sharpener's wheel. He rolls it down the street, blowing his "antara" (the little panpipe whistle with the distinctive sound), and when a client comes out with dull knives, he flips it over, attaches a belt, puts his foot to the treadle, and voilá - knives are sharpened on the turning whetstone.

That produces this sound:

The same type of vivid images are produced with the following sounds:

That's the ubiquitos D'Onofrio ice cream man...of course!

Or:

...Which is, of course, the bread cart, early in the morning, as it trundles down the street. It looks similar to this:

Or the fruit vendor:

You know the knife sharpener by his sound; so also with the ice cream man, the bread man, the fruit vendor, and more.

In missions, it is so important to give a certain sound. They need to know – no matter where we are – who we are and what we represent. The Kingdom is identified by its sounds!

Lest anyone reading this not be aware, allow me to give off the sound of an Apostolic, Pentecostal missionary:

"Hear O Israel: Jehovah our God, Jehovah is ONE." –Deuteronomy 6:4

"...Except ye believe that I AM, ye shall die in your sins." –John 8:24

  1. I loved this post, and I think you cleared up something for me! I recognize the bread cart sound, but I had no idea what it was! Honestly one of the first things I noticed about Peru the first morning I woke up there was the sounds. Everything sounded so different!

Thank God for a certain sound...a clear sound! The sound of truth is something that we desperately need more and more people to hear in these last days. I pray the Lord uses me to be a certain sound in somebody's life. Thank you for sharing your thoughts! Dios te bendiga!

    1. Glad you liked it!

If you stop and think about each area of the country that you visited, there are probably sounds (and images associated with them) that immediately come to mind.

No wonder God chose first the medium of sound to convey His message to the world...

      ¡Dios the bendiga a ti, también! :)

  2. Interesting, working inside a penal institition for ten years it became our second nature to listen to everything around us. At times our lives and safety depended on it. Amen, love our Apostolic Pentecostal sound!
